Why Do You Need a Mexican Bank Account?
If you're buying property, paying rent or simply living in Mexico, a local bank account makes daily operations much smoother. Maintenance fees, property tax, utilities and notary transfers are far simpler from a Mexican account. Notaries also typically require traceable funds for property purchases, and a local account adds credibility to the process.
General Requirements for Foreigners
- Valid passport (original and copy)
- Proof of address in Mexico (utility bill in your name or lease agreement)
- RFC (tax ID number): not always mandatory but many banks request it. Obtainable at SAT offices or online.
- Temporary or permanent residency visa: not always required but simplifies the process considerably
Banks That Accept Foreign Clients (2026)
BBVA México
One of the most accessible for foreigners. Requires passport and proof of address. Branches across the Riviera Maya. Excellent mobile app with international SWIFT transfers. Basic account has no monthly fee with a minimum balance maintained.
Banamex (Citibanamex)
Also accepts foreigners with a passport. Has agreements with international Citibank facilitating transfers between both systems.
HSBC México
For HSBC international clients, opening may be easier through inter-affiliate agreements. Accepts passport and proof of address.
Digital Alternatives Without Residency
- Nubank México: 100% digital opening, no maintenance fee, debit card included. Accepts foreigners with passport and proof of address.
- Mercado Pago: Digital wallet for receiving peso transfers, paying bills and online purchases.
- Albo: Mexican fintech with digital opening. Useful for daily expenses while you process a traditional bank account.
International Transfers to Your Mexican Account
For real estate purchases you'll need to transfer funds from abroad. Mexican banks accept SWIFT transfers. The receiving bank applies the exchange rate, so consider alternatives like Wise (TransferWise) to minimize conversion costs. Transfers over USD 10,000 require source-of-funds documentation from the bank and notary — standard procedure for legitimate funds.
