Mexico has real security challenges in many parts of the country, and international media amplifies these issues without geographic nuance. The result is a perception that often doesn't match the daily experience of the 100,000+ foreigners living on the Riviera Maya.
The Fundamental Distinction: Tourist Zone vs. Conflict Zone
The serious security problems in Mexico (cartels, inter-organizational violence) occur mainly in states like Sinaloa, Colima, Guerrero and parts of Tamaulipas. Quintana Roo — where the Riviera Maya is located — is historically one of Mexico's states with the lowest incidence of serious crimes against civilians.
Zone-by-Zone Analysis (2025–2026)
Cancún – Hotel Zone and Puerto Cancún
The Hotel Zone is one of Mexico's most surveilled areas due to its tourism importance. Puerto Cancún, as a gated luxury community, has security comparable to any gated community in Florida.
Playa del Carmen
5th Avenue and the beach area are very safe during the day. The nightlife zone (Corazón Street, certain parts of 12th Avenue) has higher incidence of petty theft and fights at night. Most foreign residents live in gated communities or residential zones (Zazil-Ha, Playacar) where incidents are minimal.
Tulum
Tulum had high-profile incidents in 2022–2023. In 2025–2026, National Guard presence and public security investments have improved the situation. The hotel zone and luxury residential areas (Aldea Zamá, La Veleta) have very low crime incidence.
Puerto Morelos
One of the most peaceful areas on the Riviera Maya. Small, consolidated community with active permanent residents. Virtually no significant incidents against foreigners.
Practical Tips from Long-Term Residents
- Live in gated communities with private security
- Use Uber exclusively instead of street taxis
- Avoid displaying valuables in high-density tourist areas
- Join expat WhatsApp/Telegram groups that share real-time security alerts
- Don't walk alone at night in entertainment districts
- Keep important documents at home, not in your wallet
- Maintain medical insurance with local coverage
