According to the National Association of Realtors in the United States, 70% of homebuyers who have pets consider the neighborhood's pet-friendliness as a determining factor in their purchase decision. If you are part of that group and are considering moving to Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen or any other city in the Riviera Maya with your dog, cat or both, this guide covers everything you need to know: from import procedures to the best veterinarians and the condominiums that truly accept pets without hidden restrictions.
SENASICA requirements for bringing pets to Mexico
SENASICA (National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality) regulates the importation of companion animals into Mexico. The current requirements for dogs and cats coming from the United States, Canada or the European Union are as follows:
For dogs: a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian from the country of origin, no more than 10 days old at the time of entry. A current rabies vaccination (administered at least 15 days before travel). Treatment for internal and external parasites within the previous 6 months. Starting in August 2024, the United States additionally requires the CDC Dog Import Form completed online before travel for re-entry, but this requirement does not apply for entry into Mexico.
For cats: a health certificate with the same age conditions. A current rabies vaccination. The CDC form is not required.
Upon arrival at Cancun International Airport (CUN), a SENASICA inspector reviews the documentation at the point of entry. The process takes between 15 and 45 minutes. There is no quarantine for pets from low rabies-risk countries (which include the United States, Canada and most of Europe). The inspection fee is approximately $25 USD.
Flights with pets: airlines and routes
Volaris and VivaAerobus allow pets in cabin (up to 10 kg with carrier) on domestic and international flights from U.S. cities. The cost ranges from $50 to $100 USD per leg. American Airlines, United and Delta accept pets in cabin on routes to Cancun with size and breed restrictions that vary by airline.
For pets traveling in cargo (large dogs), options are more limited. United PetSafe operates temperature-controlled cargo service. American Airlines suspended its cargo pet service in summer (May to September) due to ramp temperatures. The alternative for large breed dogs is to hire a specialized pet transport service (pet relocation) such as PetRelocation or CitizenShipper, which arrange dedicated cargo flights. The cost ranges from $1,500 to $4,000 USD depending on the size of the animal and the route.
Veterinarians in the Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya has bilingual veterinarians (Spanish and English) in all major cities.
In Playa del Carmen: Hospital Veterinario Playa del Carmen (on Avenida CTM), Clinica Veterinaria Pet's Paradise (Playacar area) and Dr. Rodolfo Perez (24/7 emergencies on Avenida Constituyentes). All practice with international standards and have diagnostic imaging equipment.
In Cancun: Hospital Veterinario del Sureste (Supermanzana 25), Clinica Animed (Hotel Zone) and the Hospital Veterinario of Universidad Anahuac Cancun (which operates as a teaching hospital with specialists). In Tulum, the selection is more limited but growing: Clinica Veterinaria Tulum on the main avenue of Aldea Zama covers general consultations, vaccinations and minor surgeries.
For after-hours emergencies, Puerto Aventuras and Puerto Morelos have veterinarians who make house calls. In Cozumel, Clinica Veterinaria Cozumel (downtown San Miguel) is the main reference. In Isla Mujeres, there is a veterinarian in the town center, but complex cases are referred to Hospital Veterinario del Sureste in Cancun, accessible by ferry and car in under 90 minutes.
Pet-friendly condominiums: what nobody tells you
Just because a real estate development says "pet-friendly" in its pre-sale brochure does not always mean what you think. Some condominiums allow pets but with weight restrictions (maximum 10 or 15 kg), breed restrictions (excluding breeds classified as "dangerous") or quantity restrictions (one pet per unit). Others charge an additional deposit of $500 to $2,000 USD per pet. And some prohibit pets in common areas such as the pool, gym and rooftop garden.
Before buying, request a copy of the condominium's internal regulations (reglamento de condominos) and look for the pet section. At L'Agence we review this point as part of the due diligence for every property because we know that for many buyers, if the dog does not get in, the deal does not close.
The areas with the most pet-friendly options in the Riviera Maya are Playacar (houses with gardens), Puerto Aventuras (marina with wide walkways), the Corasol area in Playa del Carmen (trails and internal parks) and the Hotel Zone of Cancun (some towers with internal dog parks). In Tulum, new developments in Aldea Zama tend to be more permissive than boutique projects in the Hotel Zone.
Beaches and parks for dogs
There is no official "dog beach" in the Riviera Maya, but in practice, the public beaches of Puerto Morelos, Mahahual and the northern zone of Tulum are tolerant of dogs in the early morning hours and at sunset. In Playa del Carmen, the beach north of the Cozumel pier (past Calle 50) has fewer restrictions. Cancun inaugurated a dog park in Supermanzana 44 that serves as a gathering point for the dog-owner community.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need quarantine to bring my pet to Mexico? No. Pets from the United States, Canada and the European Union do not require quarantine in Mexico. You only need a recent health certificate (maximum 10 days old), a current rabies vaccination and antiparasitic treatment. The inspection at Cancun airport takes between 15 and 45 minutes and costs approximately $25 USD.
Can I bring large breed dogs to the Riviera Maya? Yes, but air transport is more complex. Dogs over 10 kg cannot travel in cabin and must go in cargo or on a dedicated cargo flight. Pet relocation services cost between $1,500 and $4,000 USD. Once in the Riviera Maya, homes in Playacar, Puerto Aventuras and the residential area of Cancun offer enough space for large breeds.
Do all condominiums in the Riviera Maya accept pets? No. Many developments have weight, breed or quantity restrictions. Some charge additional deposits. It is essential to review the condominium bylaws before buying. The developments with the highest pet acceptance are in Playacar, Puerto Aventuras, Corasol and the residential area of Cancun.
