A Historic Plan to Protect the Mexican Caribbean

After 16 years of facing the sargassum phenomenon, President Claudia Sheinbaum has unveiled for the first time a comprehensive strategy to protect the beaches of Quintana Roo. This initiative marks a turning point in how Mexico addresses one of the Caribbean's greatest environmental challenges.

Federal Investment of Over 2.6 Billion Pesos

Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Angeles, Secretary of the Navy, presented the federal plan to tackle sargassum with an investment exceeding 2.6 billion pesos. The plan includes barrier technology, mechanized collection, and algae processing before it reaches the beaches.

International Sargassum Summit in Cancun

On October 1-2, 2026, Cancun will host an International Sargassum Summit, bringing together Caribbean nations, Brazil, and Japan to develop joint solutions to this environmental challenge. This summit positions Mexico as a regional leader in the fight against sargassum.

Mexico Surpasses 42 Million Tourists

Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodriguez Zamora, reported that Mexico has surpassed 42 million tourists and that Tulum is gearing up for its peak season. These numbers confirm that the Mexican Caribbean remains one of the world's most attractive destinations.

Sargassum Recycling and Utilization

Sebastian Ramirez Mendoza, Director General of Fonatur, emphasized that a comprehensive sargassum management approach will be promoted to protect beaches, reduce coastal erosion, and harness the algae through recycling processes. Sargassum can be transformed into fertilizer, construction material, and other value-added products.

The Private Sector Supports the Strategy

Jose Antonio Chapur, CEO of Grupo Palace, stated that sargassum is a challenge but does not stop tourism in Quintana Roo. Ivan Chavez, Executive VP of Grupo Vidanta, affirmed that "sargassum found a united Mexico."

Legal Certainty and Digitalization

The Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa, highlighted that the digitalization of land registries and the Public Property Registry helps combat irregular practices and strengthen the protection of family assets in Quintana Roo.

What This Means for Investors

This national strategy sends a clear signal to real estate investors: the federal government is committed to the sustainable protection and development of the Riviera Maya. With greater legal certainty, coastal protection infrastructure, and record tourist flows, investing in the Riviera Maya in 2026 means backing a region with institutional support at every level.
